Media
Blending media
The core of a successful green roof system is the growing media. GRS specifically formulates Green Roof media that is engineered to be light weight, porous and balanced to promote the cultivation of organics that support plant life. All components of the media are natural so as not to pollute storm water that runs off into the nearby drains, streams and lakes. Our media is formulated for the type of use and the region for optimum results.
GRS Extensive Mix
Engineered for Extensive green roofs with a media depth of 6 inches or less. Suitable for shallow rooting green roof plants such as sedum, sempervivum and other drought tolerant species. GRS Extensive is our lightest media blend for green roof systems requiring less than 45 lbs of saturated system weight.
High porosity allows the media to retain moisture in a storm event. This characteristic promotes detention of up to 90% of a 1″ event during a 24 hour period for a 4″ profile depth. (more info . . .)
Semi Intensive
Semi-Intensive growing media is engineered to support a wider plant palette than the Extensive mix. The deeper rooting structure of grasses and wildflowers require more organic content and media depth for moisture retention. Higher organic component limits media porosity so Semi-Intensive media is 10 to 20% heavier than Extensive green roof media. (more info . . .)
Intensive Media
GRS Intensive Media is blended to support growth of a wider variety of plants in the green roofing and roof garden environment. The intensive green roof is generally and green roof system that can support shrubs and trees and the widest variety of plants in a roof garden including vegetables and fruits where seasonally viable.
Our media has been used in the construction of healing gardens for hospitals; intensive gardens to provide public access for office buildings; and, gardens for raising vegetables for local restaurants. (more info . . .)
Turf Mix
GRS Turf Mix is our blend of media for bluegrass and fescue green roof implementations. We use higher organic content for turf lawns that require more nutrients and moisture content than sedum green roof plants. Our Turf mix has a higher porosity than grade landscape mix because too much moisture retention is bad for roof top lawns that require irrigation. Similar to Semi-Intensive systems, Green Roof Turf systems require at least a 6 inch profile depth because grasses are typically deeper rooting than hardier sedum perennials. (more info . . .)
Planter Mix
GRS planter media containing pathogen free organic content will be available soon. This media is specifically suited to the growth of shrubs, trees and small scale vegetable cultivation and roof top farming. (more info to come soon)
Organics
Our offerings of organic fertilizing solutions provide a non polluting method of increasing the success of green roof plantings. We eliminate the use of chemicals to ensure storm water runoff is free from phosphates and nitrates. Phosphate-free fertilization is required for all building systems that recycle storm water. Our organics are balanced and natural soil inoculants. The GRS Maintenance System increases the drought tolerance of plants and provides resistance to fungal diseases. (more info . . .)
